each of the candidates has made at least a dozen stops there this election season. nina turner is a democratic state senator from the cleveland area. the president won ohio in 2008. good to have you with us. >> thank you. >> let's look at the facts. he won ohio in 2008. he's led in the polls most of the season. unemployment in the state is below the national average. governor romney has 40 campaign field offices there. the president has 131, and still it's very close. why isn't the president running away with this if he has those advantages laid out? >> we've always known from the beginning that this would be a close election. but i believe when the ultimate ballots are cast, ohio will continue to swing as we swung in 2008 for the president by 51%. we're going to swing his way in 2012. ohioans especially know, as you pointed out, to the unemployment rate, they absolutely know who is standing by their side when it comes to making sure that we build from the middle out and not from the top down. so the president is going to win the state of ohio. >> why isn't the president pulling awa

all, i have to thank you lawrence for giving nina turner and i a chance to prove we are two different people. >> it's about time. >> no, it is all about ground game. at this stage of a campaign, it is all goabout gotv. get out the vote. it was sort of turnwe, they could turn the operation back on and the romney campaign had to ramp up which they haven't done yet. so today in ohio what you see is people literally putting people into vans and getting them to the polls. i actually saw a lot of young people at the polls, more than i would have expected and they're actually self motivated to get here and vote because they're very motivated to get it done early so they don't have to wait in line on election day. >> there was a drop in turnout for the 2010 midterm campaign. has the obama campaign been able to identify those voters and aim for them? that seems to be the first place to go to look to build up the turnout back up toward 2008 numbers. >> absolutely. we're going after them strong. make no mistake about it, the ministers in the cleveland area, or in the state of ohio to b

among voters who say they will cast their ballot by showing up on election day. nina turner has represented cleveland, ohio, since 2006. first at city hall, now as a state senator. it's great to have you with us today, and the obama campaign touted its early lead there in ohio in the early voting yesterday saying it's not going to let up. as we know, the vice president is there basically all week. the race there will only get more heated with ohio now the top market in the ad spending. i want everybody to take a look at that. $177 million. is president obama's early lead enough to buffer any gains that the romney campaign is expected to make on election day the old fashioned way? >> i believe so, thomas. i mean, ohio is the president's life line. just as we delivered ohio in 2008, we will deliver ohio in 2012. the buckeyes here in the state understand that the president's policies are what are right for the state of ohio from throwing a lifeline to the auto industry to making sure that one of the first pieces of legislation that he signed into law was the lily leadbetter act. we

, thank you for joining me. >>> joining me in studio, ohio state senator nina turner. great to have you here. i know you've been listening to the conversation about ohio, so let's dig in. their voter registration deadline is today. both candidates are in ohio today, really trying to blanket that state and get their message heard. so, we have both men lasering in on ohio. the president's going to be in columbus. romney and surrogate chris christie are going to be in cuyahoga falls. we saw the polls, romney closing in states like michigan and wisconsin. do you think he could take ohio? >> ohioans will have a flashback or a total recall, if you will, when they think about what the president has done, from rescuing the auto industry to standing up for women. they know, in fact, who to vote for. you know, the president won in 2008 ohio by 51%, and i believe that ohioans are going to recall who was actually in their corner for the last 3 1/2 years, and that is president obama. once they get over, thomas, the dazzle of the debate. we need to put that behind us and we're going to move forward.
